The Royal Marines still uphold this tradition, they always have their womens clothes in a box under their beds ready for a piss up on the town every now and then π good laugh.
I saw this pic a couple weeks ago and people were commenting that it might not have been a drag show necessarily. They could simply have been practicing a play. It was very common until very recently that no women were allowed on stage and so female roles had to be filled by men. It doesnβt necessarily mean it was a βdrag showβ.
I realize this. Imagine if an army base had a theater troupe though. It is not likely that there were a large amount of women on the base that would be interested as well. If you went to plays in town Iβm sure it would be men and women, but as they say the show must go on and the roles would have been filled by the men on base.
I wasnβt there this day and donβt know what actually happened. Iβm just saying because they were wearing dresses does not mean it was a drag show.
Itβs more specific. Iβve only ever been to one but it was more like skits, small performances, comedy skits, audience interaction, the costumes are usually more elaborate, and the participants sometimes dress up like famous performers of the opposite sex. Iβll grant you that on the surface itβs not that dissimilar. But a drag show is imho far more than simply wearing a dress.
Considering Alan Turing was chemically castrated for being gay and he was a damn war hero who helped break the enigma code, unfortunately, I don't think that season would be a fun as we would want it to be...
wait what do you mean german raid, why would you need a naval battery against planes i would have expected this to be on malaya or something with the japanese
Why assume that it was a "drag" show just because they're in dresses? During WWII it was common for soldiers to put on performances for radiotherapy and some of them would dress up as women for the comedy. I suppose you could call it drag if you wanted, but it was not at all in any way like modern drag. To them it was just fun and games for the sake of a good laugh so they could take their minds off the fact that they might die in the next battle.
You know that drag means "dressed as a girl" and became a thing in Shakespeares time? So drag is completely right and I don't know why you are arguing about that. Also why not in any way like modern drag? As far as I know, modern drag queens still want to entertain and make people laugh. There are more variety nowadays but they are still Entertainers

When hitler tries to kill the gays but the gays get a naval gun
Looks like a scene from Monty Pythonβs flying circus
Theyβd never do anything like that

I tell you ladies you are the prettiest!!
I better change my name to Pimp-daddy Payne.
Good day Ms Walburg.
Nothing more demoralizing then being killed by a bunch of drag queens during ww2.
Hereβs to the lads in flour sacks shooting loads of powder blacks.
No wonder hittler kill himself. He just couldn't handle it.
Fire Mrs. Nesbitt.
I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.
How could you say that?! How could you shame me in front of all these new people?!
The Royal Marines still conduct most of their training in dresses.
Ironic them putting on drag shows when they kept sterilizing gay men until the 1960s.

Until the Paras come along with their even prettier garments.
And that's how we ended up with the most fabulous military in the world.
They were just jealous of the Highlander units and their magnificent fucking kilts.
I learned all I know about the UK from Monty Python.
A man in womens clothing smashing good laugh
The more ya know. Also, Greeks, all drag all the time :D.
Hyperbole of course. Tongue in cheek.
Whose cheek ?
"Interrupted," right.
Oh, Iβve got a brand new shiny helmet...
AND A PAIR OF KINKY BOOTS
oh, I've got a lovely new flak jacket
You're not a real man if you can't put on a dress and see the funny side of it.
Before Maxwell Klinger, there was this.

You're thinking of more the time of Shakespeare, not bloody 1940

So what exactly is a "drag show"?
Itβs more specific. Iβve only ever been to one but it was more like skits, small performances, comedy skits, audience interaction, the costumes are usually more elaborate, and the participants sometimes dress up like famous performers of the opposite sex. Imagine Rupaul's Drag Race in WWII
Considering Alan Turing was chemically castrated for being gay and he was a damn war hero who helped break the enigma code, unfortunately, I don't think that season would be a fun as we would want it to be...
This picture just cured my depression
Should have been standard uniform
Hey, I walked past Shornemead Fort at the weekend!
There is just one outside wall left these days and it is on the edge of a nature reserve.

It's surreal isn't it? I biked out there with my son a couple of times, from Gravesend prom along the canal.
Imagine being the Germans and successfully taking that position. Storming in there to take prisoners.
Like they walked into the wrong bunker.
That guy with the helmet has a smile that says, "That mother fucker is taking a picture, isn't he. I'm never going to live this down."
And one guy is wearing a bonnet behind the barrel.
Lmfao that guy in front half smiling like βthis is fucking ridiculous I canβt believe weβre actually doing thisβ
If only Jerry knew.
wait what do you mean german raid, why would you need a naval battery against planes i would have expected this to be on malaya or something with the japanese
Is this how we won the war!?
[deleted]
Yeah..... this ainβt it
2nd dude on the gun was joked out ππ
And this not was gay?
Drag shows were pretty common entertainment in the UK and Europe. For in the US, it was pretty much frowned upon.
Tally ho lads, letβs give Jerry a beating he wonβt forget!
Girls with guns
Ok,but they look so pretty in this-
Oh my god, just noticed the one behind the barrel wearing a bonnet. If only they knew what fucked them over.
Don't you hate it when you're doing a drag show rehearsal and a German raid interrupts you so you have to operate a naval gun to kill some Nazis?
Yeah, me neither.
definitly groovy
Now I understand Monty Python.
