We used to add half a sewing pin to the front on them... they didnβt go far but they sure stuck the landing. I had about a dozen stuck in the ceiling before one went awry and I ended up with a pin embedded about half an inch under my eyeball.
I am why your parents always told you not to play with matches...
I remember my industrial arts (fancy name for shop class) teachers never wore safety goggles. They claimed they had "special glasses." Always struck me as odd. Even if they did have special lenses, glasses are missing some pretty key elements of safety goggles.
Heck I used to do this! We never bothered with the fins though. Easiest method, take a long pin and lay out along the side of a match stick (wooden) so that the tip of the pin is against the match head. Wrap solidly in a scrap of aluminum foil, then slide the pin out, leaving a channel for the escaping gas to go towards the tail of the match. Now make a launcher where you can get a flame under the head, and you're off to the races!
I get little science experiment kits for my "daughter" that are WAY too advanced for her because I want to play with them. She still has fun too. Being an adult doesn't mean you can't sometimes be a kid.
Oh I did that as a kid alright. I graduated to bigger things little by little. First it was the realization that strike-anywhere matches where way better. Then it was use three matches in a bundle for better performance. Before long I was using a butter knife to scrape off the phosphor for a hundred matches to essentially make something like gunpowder. All good stuff!
match is wrapped in tinfoil. the flare of gas when the match head ignites is trapped by the tinfoil, except at a small opening near the back of the rocket (the opening around the stick supporting the rocket prior to launch). The trapped gas escapes out of this thin opening, which propels the rocket forward.
In a sense it works exactly the same way as any solid fuel rocket
Oh, wow, thank you. This is the explanation i was curious about. I had worked out some parts but it didn't occur to me ton leave a gap at the back of the match.
The matchstick is propelling the rocket....
An explanation for non geniuses: the thick part with the chemicals goes poof when you light it on fire right? When you cover it up with foil like shown the poof has nowhere to go except in one direction. That propells the rocket.
Is this just a rocket shaped hat that sits on the match? When the match head ignites. The energy propels down and out the bottom launching the rocket shaped hat (aluminum foil?) into space.
I used to do this off of forks in diners when there was still an ash tray and book of matches on every table. I remember i got banned from south street diner in boston for it back when i was in college.
yeah we use to do that as well though there was this one time we made old glass coke bottle turn into a rocket with what back then was known as black spider fireworks, can't remember how we did it, tho i use to throw them into a bottle, put the lid up and then the lid gets sent flying, i did have a friend who was a recce demolitions expert that made home made rocket launchers and took them to the local firing range, lol the banned him from going there again lol

RIP Grant
He died?
two years ago dude
F
what!?
Holy shite 2 years already? aging meme intensifies
bruh
Since when is July 2020, 2 years ago? And why does this have so many upvotes. Time isnt going that fast chill out.
Iβm talking about Grant Thompson.
Not Grant Imahara
Ah shit, I'll go stand in the corner
What? He died in July 2020. Where have you been?
check the video again, July 2019.
What do you mean. He died on July, 13 2020. Am I missing something? There are news articles dated a day after his death too.
Its July 29th 2019 look it up
Nvm im a fucking idiot. I just assumed it was Grant Imahara for some unknown reason. Guess its just because hes the most recent famous Grant death.
Sorry
Wait Grant Imahara died?
Finding out in such a casual conversation between strangers actually kind of hurts. My childhood and early 20s are now dead as well.
...
Aneurysm outta nowhere. Scary.
F
RIP Grant:(
I seen the post and first thing I thought
Wait he died?
How
Paragliding accident
Damn, That really sad. I'm surprised I just now heard.
Dylan Hart the founder of Household Hacker died a couple months ago too, I remember binge watching them when I was like 8
I remember trying to adjust my antennas to get TV reception when I was 8.
We used to add half a sewing pin to the front on them... they didnβt go far but they sure stuck the landing. I had about a dozen stuck in the ceiling before one went awry and I ended up with a pin embedded about half an inch under my eyeball.

Or wear safety goggles
8 year old me thought sunglasses were the same thing, so I wore those, it still stabbed me.

They told you not to wear safety goggles?
It's Carol!
Or Red Ryder Air Rifles...."you'll shoot your eye out"
I'm glad pyro-8-year-old me never found out about this...
Pyro 8 year old me found out about these. Surprisingly, I wasnβt the reason my house burned down
How?

I may do this with a friend for fun. I had no childhood so this would be a nice way to get one at fifty years old.
Get your childhood joy where you can, my friend. If you didn't make your own, store bought is JUST FINE.
I get little science experiment kits for my "daughter" that are WAY too advanced for her because I want to play with them. She still has fun too. Being an adult doesn't mean you can't sometimes be a kid.
We're you born 21?!?
I have had a complicated life and i have zero reason to explain or justify it to you beyond saying that my early life is a blank.
I'm sorry to hear you had a bad early life. I hope you are getting assistance to deal with your issues.
Didn't even need to respond tbh, but you did Β―\(γ)/Β―

We did this in science class in 7th grade. I still remember how fun this was.

I used to do this as a kid. Key is to have a little space between the foil and the match for gasses to go through, not too big and not too small
Yes, we used a safety pin to ram an exhaust channel up into it.
Never thought to add rear stabilizers like in this vid because I was a kid back in the stone age before they were invented.
Haha thereβs a beauty also to not knowing and experimenting and finding things for yourself (vs say just following some online instructions)
The wood stick is a match.
Thanks genius. /s
I meant what is propelling the tiny rocket?

The match head, genius
How you gonna be an ass to someone explaining this to you when youβre too dumb to understand this simple video?
Tbf it didn't explain anything.
The matchstick is propelling the rocket.... An explanation for non geniuses: the thick part with the chemicals goes poof when you light it on fire right? When you cover it up with foil like shown the poof has nowhere to go except in one direction. That propells the rocket.
Step 1: Make rocket from match
Step 2: Burn down house
Step 3: get new house*
*repeat as necessary until desired internet stardom achieved
Damn Rip Grant aka the king of random.
Really cool, but prob not the best idea to use the box of matches as a launch platform.
Ow! My eye ;)
Anybody else watch this for five minutes straight waiting for the slow-mo shot?
[deleted]
Uranium. But you could also use tin foil if your uranium stock is empty
If you canβt find tin foil, use aluminum foil
You can get some at the drugstore right next to the plutonium.
I doubt they have tin foil in the drugstore
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf0qa0c3Vrw
Nope, this one
Of GME tendies
No, you get the tendies, they donβt take you there
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea demonstrating its military strength.
RIP Grant, I was one of the originals, so I'm sad to see how the channel turned out
That's dope! Currently trying something similar, making a rocket out of a meme stock.
Very cool
Excellent !
Instructions?
My dad taught me how to do this during the early days of quarantine, can't wait for 2025 when I can finally go outside and do it.
Kim Yong Un want's to know you're location.
Was making these 40 years ago. Old school science trick.
Would it have killed them to film the thing in flight?
This is a how to video on how to start the 2021 wildfire season.
Is this GME?
Asking for a friend.
The king of random died and a few days ago we found out that the household hacker has also diedβ¦
I did this in middle school science class
Grugg make shiny leaf go in air with fire stick.
thats cool
No, its hot
lol
Rest in peace.
Is this just a rocket shaped hat that sits on the match? When the match head ignites. The energy propels down and out the bottom launching the rocket shaped hat (aluminum foil?) into space.
No, go here for a better explanation
Very nice. Thank you
Last time I saw someone do this they set fire to the curtains...
I used to do this off of forks in diners when there was still an ash tray and book of matches on every table. I remember i got banned from south street diner in boston for it back when i was in college.
Did with as a kid but with an empty c02 canister. I'm so glad it didn't hit anything π¬
yeah we use to do that as well though there was this one time we made old glass coke bottle turn into a rocket with what back then was known as black spider fireworks, can't remember how we did it, tho i use to throw them into a bottle, put the lid up and then the lid gets sent flying, i did have a friend who was a recce demolitions expert that made home made rocket launchers and took them to the local firing range, lol the banned him from going there again lol
Used to do this all the time with my father and brother when we were kids.
A ton of fun!
Used to do this as a kid, inside our house. Burned the carpet at least twice..lol.
I do not recommend you do this indoors.
Rest in peace Grant Thompson
Totally an inspiration to me, RIP Grant, you are missed
My dad showed me how to do this, it was hilarious on the bigger matches. Great times.
Post this on r/wallstreetbets and it will go off I tell you.... π
RIP Grantβ¦.
To the moon πππ
Iβll remember this next time Iβm in prison
Rest in peace Grant.
mini panzerfaust
How the fuck did he do that!
Watch the video
What are the materials? And how do I build the rocket? What are his goals? Whatβs his sexuality? Chanel or Louie v?
https://youtu.be/WFyKgmnCF-8
I used to make these, mine never flew quite that well though.
Grant is that guy who keeps giving me alot of stupid fun ideas i wasted my lunch money on to make his projects . I sure miss him
Learned this in chemistry class in 1991, burned down Β½ of my folksβ backyard. The upside, I got to redesign to landscaping.
WE FOUND ELON ON REDDIT!
How do?
