Oh dear gods Iβll have to do that when Iβm bored. Growing up in a church when they took John Piper seriously was weird. And I learned recently that women with muscles apparently scare Piper and that he has a βgodlyβ exercise routine
No but her style of refutation is more effective in any case than the normal fact check style methinks.
There is not getting through to some of those political enthusiasts I fear, if a killer virus wasn't enough to make them demand truth for crucial subjects, nothing will bring them back.
What's best about it is she effectively refutes the bs claims, the way she does it is far far more effective than the dry refutations our politicians use to refute certain other less honest politicians for instance.
I am a psychologist. My daughter came tearfully to me one day. She was in great distress and apparently had been for about 3 days thinking she had a disorder because she saw something on Tiktok. What she described was 100% normal feelings for a teenage kid. Iβm glad I was able to normalize it for her. I was enraged by the POS Tiktok people who post BS making people believe there is something wrong with them. Iβm so glad someone is debunking.
I donβt get why psychology has so many armchair experts... I donβt find near as many armchair experts in other fields, not astronomy, not chemistry. Medicine might be the only other field where misinformation is as rampant as psychology
People tend to break things down to what they feel and what they want. Other fields are more controversal. If the girl tells you "The moon looks big tonight. So romantic." answering "Nah the moon alwas is 30 arc minutes in size. ThatΒ΄s just the atmosphere fooling you." will likely make the date more awkward (depending on the company) than "The Greeks belived that means Luna came closer to show lovers their way."
Psychology and medicine affects every single person directly. Every "Why do I feel like this?" or "How can one feel better" can be answered by those fields. Since it affects everybody people are more willing to talk about it. Like we are just doing. This might be wrong but it sounds right.
Good point. You could also explain the misinformation in that people are often looking for answers, and then when they experience it once, they fall victim of psychological phenomena such as cognitive bias or confirmation bias, which is a bit ironic
They know. They just donΒ΄t care. They are smart enough to know how to exploit others. You canΒ΄t tell me they are so dumb not knowing the consequences.
Reminds me of a psychopathology class I took where my professor insisted that we understand that you can't just start reading the DSM 5 and trying to label things immediately because it turns out very bad especially because sometimes it's just normal human feelings.
She gives me the same vibes as Mose from βthe Incrediblesβ βthunder-head! Cape snagged on a missile! Dyna-gal! Cape sucked into a jet turbine! NO CAPES!β
YES!!! I hate those armchair psychologists with a passion! She's debunking those myths pretty well too! I love her.
About the Barnum effect, I learned about it in psychology class. The professor started by handing us different statements written on a sheet of paper. She asked us if we agreed with the statement and why, and I totally fell for it. I raised my hand and I explained why I thought it was true (mine was that opposites attract each other) with an explanation from my personnal experience. She then said that we all had false facts, but 90% of us believed it.
The serotonin produced in the gut thing really irks me. βJust eat a balanced diet and you wonβt be depressed or anxious!β Thanks I do that already, but Iβll continue taking my damn meds, kthx.
I saw a Youtube video where strangers are revealing a secret with their back facing the camera, at the end they can choose to turn around or just walk away. There was a woman who said that she had been an advocate of naturally healing depression for a long time. She used to preach that all you have to do is to exercise, eat well and get some vitamin D. Until she actually got diagnosed with depression herself and realised that she had to take her meds in order to feel better. She didn't turn around.
God the number of stories I've heard from coworkers who say they had a client stop taking meds because they saw so and so talking about doing this and that is way too high.
I love channels that debunk things. They restore faith in society. Ann Reardon βHow to Cook Thatβ does this on YouTube with those βlife hacksβ.
He gets a lot of criticism because they sometimes needs to oversimplify stuff to fit in the format, but they also did a Adam Ruins Adam Ruins Everything about that.
That one bugged me for a different reason... partly because the coffee hasn't kicked in... I feel like from the clip there is not enough info to judge that guy.
I don't know his schtick on TikTok but it looked like exercise related stuff. Hips get tense and the most common way to say that is "your hips hold tension". It's a pop culture way of summarising the issue of sitting and neglecting hip health, but it's not that bad as a statement related to exercise. But if he's selling it as psychology he's wrong.
I mean, mindfulness and gratitude practice (tai chi, yoga, meditation, even "forest bathing") do help symptoms of depression and anxiety. So do explore those as a feel-good activity.
But a good yogi won't cross the line of psychology advice. They will just guide you through breathing and thoughts, like "take this moment to thank yourself for showing up and practicing yoga. You deserve to feel good".
So yeah. This guy gets a "not enough info" reprieve from me.
Honestly if she canβt tell me what kind of bread I am based on what Jonas Brother I had a crush on in Middle School, what kind of psychologist is she?
From what I've read, basically all students are more likely to remember things if they learn them in more than one way (seeing, hearing, doing). So rather than try to group students and say these kids need to see the material, those need to hear it, and those need to do something active, its better if all the students are engaging with the material in multiple ways.
Following her for quite some time and love her. That Max that appeared in the video really is the plague in science tik tok. He puts βaccording to science/latest studyβ in every video
This. We need more people like this who immediately call out stupid shit as stupid shit. Too many loud mouth idiots have gotten away with making false statements without getting a pop in the mouth.
Sheβs literally amazing. Not only does it kind of stop the people saying βI have thisβ and βI have thatβ who self diagnose with not even researching, posting more. But it also will open up space for people to actually educate on it. Either from experience(of course those who are diagnosed or those who did thorough research and now they have but canβt see someone to diagnose it) or from a psychologist.
What a lovely lady! We need more people like her to debunk myths on certain platforms (Tik Tik) where the information gets passed on without really cross examining it.
Ahhh good ole Tik Tok - a place where people read 2 headlines, Google why they feel sad, then perpetuate unfounded information that lacks research, resources and legitimacy. βBUt iTs sO InFOrmaTional!β
Thankfully my algorithm recommends the psychology videos that recommend getting a therapist and making sure you're comfortable with them. I must be really far gone.
yeeeees; i love this! psychology is amazing but this pseudo-science of fun fast quirky psychology "facts" is so bad but are great modern examples of, like she referenced, the barnum effect and the creation of the mbti personality test lol.
It's not just TikTok - it's ALL social media. Everyone thinks they understand or "get" psychology but they really have no idea!! I've studied psychology for years and I still don't really get half of it π
Unless you are talking about a published study, please SHUT THE F-CK UP. Sincerely, a frustrated Psych grad.
These beautiful armchair scientists make me cringe. Where do they get there information? Pop ups and adware on the chive or similar websites. Is the chive still up? You know. Thigh gaps and shit.
I love that finally someone's calling out tiktokers for their BS. This is exactly why I stopped using social media as often. There are lots of people just pulling random unfounded facts out of their asses or giving advice on the internet and ruining people's lives.
Ha ha, awesome, I've always known those personality tests are bs. I class I took basically taught us to try and manipulate people with those tests that we write ourselves.
Sheβs my new hero
Right?! Now we need a bunch of other specialists to start debunking all the shit that floats around social media.
There are some good ex-fundamentalists who debunk and mock their upbringing. Abraham Piper is one, for instance.
Is that John Pipers son? (Ughhhhhhh donβt get me started on the crazy that is Piper lol)
Yes, the one and only. You can find some of them over at r/FundieSnarkUncensored
I gotta warn you though, the subjects of that sub make John Piper look very tame.
Oh wow this is awful
Oh dear gods Iβll have to do that when Iβm bored. Growing up in a church when they took John Piper seriously was weird. And I learned recently that women with muscles apparently scare Piper and that he has a βgodlyβ exercise routine
That dude is legit nuts
Captain dissuasion?
FoodScienceBabe does a really good job of debunking food stuff, sheβs on tiktok, fb and insta
Unfortunately specialists debunking social media doesn't magically enlighten ppl cough case in point Trump bunch cough
Sigh, sadly you are right
No but her style of refutation is more effective in any case than the normal fact check style methinks.
There is not getting through to some of those political enthusiasts I fear, if a killer virus wasn't enough to make them demand truth for crucial subjects, nothing will bring them back.
I follow a norwegian doctor on YouTube who debunks a lot of stuff. It's quite interesting and I agree that we need more of this in this age.
What is his name?
His name is Wasim Zahid. If you understand norwegian it's absolutely recommended
Damn! No, I don't but thanks.
What is her name?
What's best about it is she effectively refutes the bs claims, the way she does it is far far more effective than the dry refutations our politicians use to refute certain other less honest politicians for instance.
Yeah she has a good method, we really need more like her
...
HIPS? HIPS?!
They clearly meant to say amygdalaβ¦ Itβs a common mispronunciation.
The hips donβt lie.

Where can I get that Warholian brain shirt?

Damn. Tik-Tok armchair psychologists are ruining lives without even knowing
I donβt get why psychology has so many armchair experts... I donβt find near as many armchair experts in other fields, not astronomy, not chemistry. Medicine might be the only other field where misinformation is as rampant as psychology
You've got people making shit up about the chemistry of vaccines all the time tho
But yeah its generally healthcare in some way or another
I feel like vaccines would be more tied to biology or medicine though
People tend to break things down to what they feel and what they want. Other fields are more controversal. If the girl tells you "The moon looks big tonight. So romantic." answering "Nah the moon alwas is 30 arc minutes in size. ThatΒ΄s just the atmosphere fooling you." will likely make the date more awkward (depending on the company) than "The Greeks belived that means Luna came closer to show lovers their way."

Journalism is another one
Thatβs fair, good point. A lot of normal journalists became science journalists during this pandemic without any background in science, and it shows

I love her sass! π
Finally getting professionals to debunk all these non-substantive viral junk. π
"Max, we talked about this, didn't we?"
Well she can't be right... all those people on tik tok are so good looking, I just want to believe them.
Even the first one who looked like early 90's era Michael Jackson?
Well now I gotta watch the whole thing
...
YES!!! I hate those armchair psychologists with a passion! She's debunking those myths pretty well too! I love her.

Opposites do attract because we have tiny little magnets in our brain
You should probably take a different class π€π§
I'm not falling on the Barnum effect another time!!! Just kidding, I'm probably falling for it on a regular basis. Not today, though!
I hear Womenβs Lasers at Pawnee Community College is pretty good.
I knew it!

I love that YouTuber
Remember, depression is stored in the hips. So Just amputate them AND voila! No more depression!
Yeah! Hips donβt lie!
God the number of stories I've heard from coworkers who say they had a client stop taking meds because they saw so and so talking about doing this and that is way too high.
This is TikTok I can truly support
My new favorite person is a Russian psych professor.
I love channels that debunk things. They restore faith in society. Ann Reardon βHow to Cook Thatβ does this on YouTube with those βlife hacksβ.
Oh I love Ann Reardon! I do feel bad for her husband sometimes, some of those taste tests look horrible haha
You'll love Adam Ruins Everything
He gets a lot of criticism because they sometimes needs to oversimplify stuff to fit in the format, but they also did a Adam Ruins Adam Ruins Everything about that.
Ann Reason is a queen! I found her debunking videos and then binge watched all of her videos. She's amazing
I just watched this for like an hour and a half thank you lol
Why thank you for this! Stop the social media pap. And STOP making claims based on crap. Awesome post!
Ok but not only that but her dresses are amazing!! She reminds me of Ms Frizzle
Came on here to say this; she has the most amazing clothes and her attitude is amazing!
I recognize some of her stuff from Svahausa.com (and all of their dresses and skirts have pockets!)
My entire work wardrobe is from Svaha. It's all well-made, comfortable, and has pockets.
Edit: I realize you also said "pockets," but it's great enough to mention twice.
Please tell me shipping to the UK wouldn't cost me my left elbow and my second born daughter?
Depends, does your left elbow and second born daughter cost $40?
My left elbow is "Spares or repairs only" and well, it's unlikely my partner will ever agree to another spawn so... Hypothetically speaking.....
Her daughter is on Tiktok and looks like Ms Frizzel! Its great
Because of her I need to install TikTok
That's was my first thought too. For goodness sake...
"We store trauma and anxiety in our hips."
Fucking what...
That one bugged me for a different reason... partly because the coffee hasn't kicked in... I feel like from the clip there is not enough info to judge that guy.

She tucks me in and gives me a forehead good night kiss. Nana is awesome π€©
Honestly if she canβt tell me what kind of bread I am based on what Jonas Brother I had a crush on in Middle School, what kind of psychologist is she?
Anyone have more info on the teaching to learning styles helps learners?
From what I've read, basically all students are more likely to remember things if they learn them in more than one way (seeing, hearing, doing). So rather than try to group students and say these kids need to see the material, those need to hear it, and those need to do something active, its better if all the students are engaging with the material in multiple ways.
Absolutely. The more you process something cognitively, the more it stays with you.
So both my brain AND my gut have low serotonin, cool
I'm sorry but I laughed way too hard at this. Thank you. Also me too. Also if you can't make your own serotonin store-bought is fine.
Woo! Serotonin-less buddies!.... Oh :( I've never felt so torn as to how I should be feeling about relating to someone as much as I do now.
Same. Depressed and nauseous every day
Hi. Can I play too?
I don't know if they are single or not but I'm shipping her and Dr. Fauci.
Dr Fauci is married, but I like where your head is at
She is also married, though she has a Dr. Fauci bobble head that she calls her boyfriend
it's canon
grest idea, itβs annoying when people on social media try to sound clever for their own profit but in reality say nonsense shit.
I appreciate this being out there - but I feel like the morons who need to hear this most aren't going to bother with it.
Iβve followed her for a while. Love this woman
What is her username? Iβd love to find her.
@dr_inna on TikTok
Thank you!
...
Following her for quite some time and love her. That Max that appeared in the video really is the plague in science tik tok. He puts βaccording to science/latest studyβ in every video
I'm glad there are people who debunk this out in the world.
(I seriously believed the max dude when I saw a few of his video's. Idk what I was thinking. I'm happy I saw this lol)
all iβm thinking is βthis is edna modeβs motherβ and i mean that in the best way possible (praise queen edna)
Love it. I'd like to see idiots who spout false science de-platformed.

70% percent of percentages on the internet are made up, studies say, according to science.
That's right! Many different studies have shown, that I agree with you.

Dude, I would so listen to that podcast

Tiktok is an online asylum
I'm going to use Tiktok for the first time because of her.
By the Dream logic Ryan George has a crush on me

She is using their own tactics against them lol what a amazing smart lady!
Preach, Doc, preach
She's absolutely AWESOME!
I love that she went on Tik Tok and said I want citations and references.
Wish I could upvote more than once
If I stored anxiety in my hips my ass would be as wide as the United States right now ok thank you.

ngl, this is the first time in awhile I thought about downloading tik tok. Thatβs great content.
Wait. This is a prof? Arguing against claims made by wannabe influencers? I don't know how she has the energy for this lol.

I have tiktok now. lol And yes I only follow Aunty Inna.
We have a similar issue in my country, a publicist talking about psychology issues. She has beef with another real psychologist.

Now do "Repeating something over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity." God, I hate that one
These beautiful armchair scientists make me cringe. Where do they get there information? Pop ups and adware on the chive or similar websites. Is the chive still up? You know. Thigh gaps and shit.

I really dislike TikTok. My wife is hooked on it. Getting her attention is near damn impossible when it's open.
Voice if sanity and truth in a sea of Social Media BS. Keep it up!
I love her
This is why I deleted tik tok! So much false information that is harmful for you mental health
She's the only good thing that has come out of tiktok
Ha ha, awesome, I've always known those personality tests are bs. I class I took basically taught us to try and manipulate people with those tests that we write ourselves.
Well guys we did it. We found the polar opposite of Thatveganteacher on Tiktok
