I sure hope they put one of these on the place where the person actually is/was...the dumpster. Cuz they ain’t gonna be walking thru that door obvi!!
I have mixed feelings about calling out someone as a hungry trash-picker in order to offer them food.
I mean... they’re eating out of the dumpster so I think this sign is the least of their problems. It’s sad, but they get demeaned and kicked out of public spaces all of the time. I think they would be grateful for the meal and not offended 💕
A lot of grocery stores and restaurants throw away a fuckton of tasty edible food. Not everybody that's dumpster diving is a dregs of society homeless person, and a single meal can be very little compared to the spoils of a good score.
I think if you had the means to pay for food, you wouldn’t be getting it out of the dumpster.
I had about 20 grands in my bank account last time I grabbed food out of a dumpster. Scored over 100$ worth of high end cheeses and sausage.
Also some people don't bother getting much money, allowing them to have more free time, because they know they can eat for free, dumpster diving being part of the equation.
Go have a look at /r/dumpsterdiving. It's far from being a subreddit of starving crackheads.
Gotcha. I didn’t mean any offense if that’s a thing. My point was that I don’t think the owner of this restaurant meant to offend the person in question. Homeless people are usually ran out of public spaces and most definitely not offered to come inside a store. That’s why I think they would probably take the note like I took it. As a kind gesture. Could the owner have worded that first line a little better? Probably. But at least he’s trying to help the person out. His intentions were good, so I don’t think he should be dragged because he didn’t write a politically correct note.
I think pride and respect are important, especially to people in need. Why not offer both respect and food?
I agree, but I don’t believe his intent was to be disrespectful. I don’t understand how people can take a nice act and twist it into something negative.
Like your taking my suggestion of respecting people in need, and turning it into something negative.
Ummm I agreed with you ?? Lol
Shame and stigma are the true killer when it comes to addiction and homelessness. In my past I have turned down help, as hiding my shame was more important than dying hungry and alone. This is not an easy problem. Thank the abhorrent War on Drugs.
How would you have shown respect, if you were the owner?
“They get demeaned all the time“ is your rationale? How sad.
If you want to have a pointless fight, go to a different sub. This one is for smiles. Hope you have a great day 💕💕💕
Yeah just say, anyone looking for a meal will be served.
Please come inside, no questions asked.
Post it on or near the dumpster, so no idiots looking for free meals when they can easily afford them, will try to take advantage.
I doubt if I was starving enough to eat out of a dumpster I would care if I was offended.
Be thankful your imagination cannot get you there. There is a relentless suffocating shame when living this way. It has nothing to do with taking offense, and everything to do with the ingrained knowledge that society is offended by you.
I hope you’re never in a position to find out.
People go hungry rather than be seen at food giveaways. Why is it so difficult to imagine showing discretion and respect toward those in need?
The poster literally just discribes what he was doing. To offend someone you have to make a statement of some type.
The only statements the poster makes about him are that he's human and worth more than his current circumstances.
Right??? He didn’t say “To the degenerate rifling through the dumpster for our scraps” he said “To the person going through our trash for their next meal” followed with “ You’re a human being and are worth more than a meal from a dumpster”. Some people just have a negative outlook no matter how nice the gesture 🤦♀️
That's amazing. I hope a huge racoon doesn't walk through the door in the middle of the lunch rush
Yeah put a pre-requisite of “should be rabies free”. That’ll show them!
Imagine if two raccoons in a trench coat walk in
Benevolence is in my eyes the most beautiful value.
Couldn't they just put the food in takeaway containers instead of throwing it away
There can be a lot of strict polices on food. When I worked in the service industry, my boss was very empathetic towards homeless people. But we’d have to ring it up in the system, comp it, and then get them it made freshly for them.
This probably helps with inventory and taxes as well
Exactly. It’s a win win.
Restaurants run on very slim margins. Putting the food in takeout boxes everyday, just in case someone was looking through the dumpster for food, would definitely add up and be a huge waste of money. The owner was just doing what he thought would be best. He could’ve called the police, but he chose this much kinder option instead
Not enough virtue signal since nobody but trash diggers will know.
Okay but what is I am a garbage human?
Thank you to the business owner with a heart for humanity
yeah, as long as it doesn't affect his profit margin...a cup of water? really? does he get free refills too?
Maybe this is just the first step of more free meals. Give this person the benefit of the doubt. We need more decency in this world and this person is doing at least this kindness.
Don't forget how cheap PB&Js are too. I came here hoping for someone to post that it was a PB&J shop because making the cheapest thing in the store seemed counterintuitive to "generosity"
Then, by all means, go out and make pb&j’s for your homeless community.
If more people were like this, we’d be in a much different world 💕💕💕
Can confirm. Was the dumpster.
gus from stardew valley?
Haha. I just started the game today and this post reminded me of that part.
A pb&j? I may be poor and homeless but im not a PEASENT!
That cup of water, though...
You are right, totally elevates that meal
If I were to open a shop, I would do it in where there is a lot of poverty and do my best to help those people out
