It really is. At the beginning of 2020 I was $7,400 in debt because of student loans and since December of 2020 I paid it all off thanks to the 0% interest
That is just the best feeling. Took about 13 for me. Little jelly of the people who will benefit from student loan forgiveness tho. But hopefully more people will be able to enjoy the same feeling we have. Congrats!
I think they just want a % of free money too because those years mathematically took their toll on them....
Think about it. If they lost 5-10-15 years of saving for a down payment or something, they donβt get any benefit and all the struggle. It wouldnβt be outrageous for anyone who paid off loans in the last term of the loan (5-10-15) get a % rebate of the funds they had to allocate to that loan.
The struggle isnβt over just because they paid them off. They delayed that struggle, but its footprints are forever.
i can appreciate that. having just finished paying my own off in January after 12ish years, I'd be lying if i didn't admit to feeling a bit butthurt at the prospect of all that money i could have used for other stuff.
that being said, i personally would/could not begrudge others for catching a break
I think some people are frustrated for a few reasons. To me the solution is more than just forgiveness.
If you consolidate because you plan to pay and want lower interest. You would most likely be disqualified
Not all by any means. But lots of folks can't pay loans because they chose to go to a very expensive school and or majored in like puppeteering and now can't find a job. ( I think this is a problem more in educating people in majors and job opportunities tbh)
The way it's managed is pretty terrible. The interest rates fluctuate way too much with the market. And there isn't much done in high school or by the companies to teach students about loans and repayment.
The mindset that you have have go to college. Trade schools are underrated option for a lot of people.
Don't get me wrong. Plenty of salty people who just are selfish.
I will never never never understand. I would never want people to go through the same heartache and struggle I did. I'm always in favor of progress. The government fucked me over and we find a way to fix it moving forward - awesome, I'm so glad someone didn't have the same pain I did. Someone's loans get forgiven even if mine are paid off - hell yeah friend, I remember killing myself over two jobs to afford it and it sucked, so glad other people don't have to suffer like I did.
I support the 50k with tax rebates for those who paid off their loans up to some year threshold (1990 or something).
10k per college educated person won't have the same stimulus as putting money in the pockets of consumers. 50k is closer to a down payment for some folks or a newer more reliable mode of transportation.
50k to 3.5 million people is $175 billion. It wouldn't even cost that much because not everyone in the population has tuition debt but this shows how little a program like this costs compared to the ridiculous costs of unending desert wars and corporate/1% welfare
Meanwhile, they took lower-paying jobs for the chance. Even if they switch to higher-paying jobs now, their earnings potential wonβt make up for the lost time.
After I paid mine off they kept sending me bills for .03 cents. I'd write them a check, send it and the next month I'd get another bill for more small change. It was a pain in the butt to get them to close the account as paid. Wishing you much success!!!
I've also managed to pay off my kid's braces 2 years and 4 months in advance. There is no better feeling than sacrifices and hard work paying off. Being an adult sucks sometimes but when you get it right, it feels amazing.
Oh man 12 years? How much did you start with? I'm a 3rd year vet student sitting at $180k and the simulations i ran show me literally never keeping up with interest.
Nowhere even close to that my dude. Like. Nowhere.
But like the Neitherworld receptionist, Miss Argentina, says to Barbara and Adam Maitland in Beetlejuice: This is what happens when you die. And this is what happens when he dies. It's all very personal.
Your life situation may not require 12 years. Mine did. I'm just glad I finally got here and you will too. Sending future congratulations.
They literally put suicide prevention and financial anxiety education into the veterinary medicine curriculum because we live in debt our whole lives. We are educated on / do all the same things (if not more) as a human physician but because of insurance gouging they make 120k while vets make $70k/year after graduating medical school with the same $200-$300k debt. It blows.
Theres debt forgiveness in my 50's if i never screw anything up, but since forgiveness is considered a taxable gift I will need to pay $100k up front in taxes.
Whatβs your degree in? With those kind of loans, you should be making 6 figures as a lawyer or low level doctor. Making payments easy breezy. Hate to say it but Iβm gonna call shenanigans.
Over $30,000, which when looking at 100k loans seems insignificant, but I graduated during the recession, couldn't find a job, couldn't start paying until forced to at the end of the grace period, by which time the interest had piled up.
Payed only minimum payments as a single parent until I could afford to pay more each month. Threw tax money and bonuses at it for years all while raising 3 kids with no child support.
Man. I don't think I ever really broke it down like that, to even myself, until just now. That's heavy.
How old are you? Let your family worry about your cremation. When I die I want it to be a pain, I'm having my casket hauled to italy, then hauled all across europe across the United States as my dying wish. Just to show that I'm not going down so easy.
Itβs fantastic, and does make me smile, but itβs also dystopian. I donβt mean to ruin this for you, because of course itβs wonderful for you to pay back your student loans, but the very fact you had to take loans and go in debt to even have an education is terrible. Education, of all levels from postgraduate to preschool, is a right
Great job! It feels so good to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel! I have one payment left and I thought this day would never come.
One good thing that came from COVID....no interest on student loans. So if you can keep paying it down, it goes a little faster!
You crazy son of a bitch you did it!
Insert 80s freeze frame fist pump jump here
van halen jump plays
chariots of fire as the credits roll, you running out to the street and into the sunset as waves of people clap you on
This zero interest and delayed payments on student loans has been super helpful for paying off debt.
Absolutely. I carpe'd the shit out of that potestatem.

Student loans are such a terrible burden. I hope everyone gets the good feels one day.
Exactly. I donβt understand the people who are salty about it and are against it.
the "i went through it so you should too " crowd are so confusing
I think they just want a % of free money too because those years mathematically took their toll on them....

That's why the best forgiveness plans have a tax refund benefit built in for those who have already paid off their loans. No bad feelings there right?
No shit? Never heard about that right on. Either way we all kinda win.
Exactly! Let's come back to this comment thread in 10 years and laugh cry at it still not being done. ππ
Yes thatβs why itβs better to do 10k and this plan then 50k and no plan. Baby steps.
I support the 50k with tax rebates for those who paid off their loans up to some year threshold (1990 or something).

Iβm with you.
I was just saying if picking between the costs of two, start with the one that helps all for less than fewer for more.
Donβt be jealous of those who attempted PSLF. Less than 1% have achieved forgiveness, per recent data: https://www.moneyunder30.com/should-i-stick-with-public-service-loan-forgiveness
Meanwhile, they took lower-paying jobs for the chance. Even if they switch to higher-paying jobs now, their earnings potential wonβt make up for the lost time.
You may still owe a small amount of interest.
And thatβs amazing!
I hope not. It was in forbearance because of covid and it said no interest was accumulated.
Thank you!
Whoo hoo! Even better.
Youβll sleep like a log, you have no idea.
After I paid mine off they kept sending me bills for .03 cents. I'd write them a check, send it and the next month I'd get another bill for more small change. It was a pain in the butt to get them to close the account as paid. Wishing you much success!!!
Thank you so much!
Congrats! That is suck an awesome feeling, I just paid off my car last month and it was great.
Thanks! And congrats to you too!
Nice. Have your life back
It kind of legit feels like that.
Well done and congrats!

That's awesome!! Congratulations!!
Congrats dude! Hope it's all uphill from here for ya!
Congrats, it's such a great feeling!!
And the date! Congrats, great things have small beginnings π§ββοΈ
Such a feeling of accomplishment, you must feel like you are walking taller, with this responsibity taken care of. Congratulations!
I've also managed to pay off my kid's braces 2 years and 4 months in advance. There is no better feeling than sacrifices and hard work paying off. Being an adult sucks sometimes but when you get it right, it feels amazing.

Oof. You must really want to be a vet. That's fuckin scary.
How did you mentally prepare yourself for that?
I always wanted to be a vet but given the way the economy is now I dont know how I would ever afford it
Whatβs your degree in? With those kind of loans, you should be making 6 figures as a lawyer or low level doctor. Making payments easy breezy. Hate to say it but Iβm gonna call shenanigans.
How much did you have originally?

Iβve been there. Finally paid off my loan last year. Congratulations.
Thank you. Congrats to you too!
Yes!!!! I AM SO PROUD OF YOU!!!
I hope you have a celebration today.
Thank you! I'll celebrate when I log back on and it says: Balance:$0

Just a recommendation, but it Might be a good idea to start thinking about retirement savings if you havenβt already.
I do have a 401K and I put in 12%. Going to 15% next year after I starting planning and paying for my cremation.
How old are you? Let your family worry about your cremation. When I die I want it to be a pain, I'm having my casket hauled to italy, then hauled all across europe across the United States as my dying wish. Just to show that I'm not going down so easy.

Awesome! Congrats!
Congrats!!!! Now fight the urge to use the income you were putting towards it to buy a new car or something lol. Debt free is a great feeling
Congrats! Iβve been trying to pay off 186k in student loans for about 10 years now. Still 70k to go.
Way to go!
As a European this just makes me sad. You shouldn't have to being paying off loans for 12 years just to get an education :((((
r/ABoringDystopia
That's incredible! I'm just now starting to pay down my loans and hoping to he done in 10 years. If I'm lucky. Awesome job!
Congratulations!!!
Congratulations!
Such an amazing feeling! Congrats!!
Outstanding!!! Great job!!!
Is everyone not holding into the last of their student loans? I'm pretty sure Biden is going to wipe at least $10k....
Congratulations!!
thatβs amazing!! congratulations!! πΎππ
Letβs gooooo!!!!
Nice win!
Eeeek!! This is so exciting! Iβm still 60k-ish from this moment but seeing you get there is encouraging!!
Thatβs great. Do you think student debt loans should be forgiven?
Fuck ya!
Great job! It feels so good to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel! I have one payment left and I thought this day would never come. One good thing that came from COVID....no interest on student loans. So if you can keep paying it down, it goes a little faster!
I know that feeling. 40 years ago I sent in the last one, but it was a tear-off stub with the check.
I remember this feeling! It was AMAZING!!! Good for you!!!
Hell yeah!!! Thanks for sharing this beautiful moment!
